DUI Charges are on the Decline

The Uber effect on the decline of DUI (Driving Under the Influence) arrests is becoming increasingly obvious. A recent study suggests the use of Uber has caused a 10% decline in DUI arrests in cities where Uber is operating. That is no surprise and actually quite encouraging to know. Frequent Uber users know how easy and fast it is to get an Uber driver when you want to go somewhere. All Uber drivers are competing for those rides so the closest to your location responds relatively fast. People are being more responsible when they are going out for a night on the town, and hopefully the trend will continue.

A DUI arrest is nothing to take lightly, and all of the costs the perpetrator will incur for a DUI will add up into the thousands of dollars. These costs will include legal fees, court fines and fees, and DUI class fees.  It’s just not worth it!  In California, if a person decides to drive home after a night of drinking, gets in a car accident and kills the other driver, that person can be charged with murder. When comparing the costs for a DUI to a prison term for murder, it’s a no brainier why everyone should choose not to drink and drive.

But the question remains, what more can be done to help continue the decline in DUI arrests? One idea is requiring all vehicles to have an ignition interlock device installed in their cars. The ignition interlock device (IID) is a device that is installed and wired to the vehicle’s ignition. The device requires a breath sample before the vehicle will start. So if the device detects alcohol on the breath, the person cannot drive the car. Although in theory this seems like a great idea, not everyone engages in drinking alcoholic beverages and would not want to be delayed in getting where they need to go by breathing into a device before they can start their car.

Another option is increasing the penalties for DUI sentences. This may also seem like a great idea in theory, but who actually researches the penalties for a DUI prior to going out drinking for the night? It is doubtful that people are even aware of the penalties of a DUI before they are actually arrested for one. The bottom line is it all boils down to personal responsibility. The best thing for all the drinkers to do is make a pact with yourself that you will NEVER drive a car when you are going out to party for the evening. Even if in your mind you only plan on drinking one drink.
